Our Process:
The process of creating custom concrete countertops typically ranges from three to four weeks from the time the template is completed through installation of the final product. Even though countertops and other fixtures are among the last installed in a new building, clients should begin their consultations early–on to allow for ample time in designing the concept, producing color samples and crafting the final product.
The process of designing and creating custom concrete fixtures consists of three stages–preproduction, production and post production–each of which has several steps.
Preproduction:
- 1. Initial meeting:
Meeting with client to discuss project and look at examples. - 2. Estimate:
Estimate for project is presented the same or next day it’s requested. - 3. Contract and Deposit:
If estimate is approved, a contract is drawn up, signed and submitted with a 50% deposit. At this time, a date is set to template for the countertops. - 4. Site prep:
The existing countertops (if client is completing a remodeling project) are removed by client and cabinets are checked for structural support and level.
Production:
- 5. Template:
The template is made and taken back to the shop for forming. Items needed on site for templating are the sink, faucet and any other item that will penetrate the countertop. These items will also need to be taken back to the shop for forming.
Note: In new construction, cabinets must be installed and level before templates are made. If replacing existing countertops, the old countertops must be removed prior to templating. - 6. Forming:
Forms are made from the templates and sink. All reinforcement is cut and assembled. - 7. Pouring:
Concrete is mixed and poured in the forms. - 8. Curing:
In a matter of two to four days depending on thickness and other variables, the concrete will set.
Post-Production:
- 9. Processing:
Countertops are processed using handheld grinders. The time for this varies depending on how little or how much exposed aggregate the client wants. This process also includes 2 to 3 grouting steps. Grouting is done to fill in the small voids that the processing reveals. - 10. Sealing:
The countertops are sealed and set aside for curing. The tops should remain in the shop for at least 3 days before installation giving the sealer time to cure. - 11. Installation:
Countertops are installed along with the sink and faucet. The client is responsible for connecting the plumbing.
Countertops are ready for use after the caulking around the sink cures (about 8 hours).
