Concrete applications can be a great way to make your home more ’green.’ By now we know how important it is to be environmentally conscious and do our part to conserve energy, reduce waste and preserve our planet. Like other industries, concrete has evolved and now offers many green solutions.
Advanced materials and modern production processes have improved the quality of concrete applications and have reduced their negative impact on our environment. From the type of concrete we start with, to the finishes we use to protect the piece’s integrity, Counterpart, LLC provides environmentally–friendly concrete options.
Here are some more tips to help you live in a greener, more energy–efficient manner:
- Repurpose items
- Remember your reusable bags when you head to the store
- Reuse or recycle items such as plastic shopping bags, plastic containers, boxes, packing peanuts, printer cartridges, cell phones, etc.
- Use cloth towels rather than paper towels
- Avoid using disposable plates, utensils and cups
- Purchase items with minimal packaging
- Ensure that your home is well insulated
- Shut off lights and unplug electronics (such as phone chargers) when not in use
- Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth, etc.
- Buy products that are non–toxic and made from natural components
- Support local businesses and shop nearby to limit transportation
- Group errands together rather than making several trips
- Replace broken appliances with energy or water efficient models
- Look for items made from recycled materials
- Reuse blank sides of paper
- Use electronic filing and print documents only when necessary
- Donate or give away items you no longer want
- Consider a car powered by alternative energy (or one that uses biodiesels or ethanol for fuel) when you replace your current vehicle
- Dispose of motor oil, chemicals and medications responsibly
- Utilize public transportation when available
- Program your thermostat to fit your routine
- Eat organic food
- Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs)
- Use rechargeable batteries
- Wash clothes in cold water when possible
- Install low–flow showerheads and faucet aerators
- Carry water or beverages in reusable containers
With a little effort, these green tips can become habits that will help decrease our negative impact on our environment and may even save you money.
